Explore our heritage.

Our story spans generations of shipbuilding, maritime engineering and vessel operations. It is a history of practical experience, technical expertise and a belief that better vessel design comes from understanding the realities of construction and operation.

Our industrial roots.

The story goes go back to 1928, when Jonas Løland established Løland Motorverkstad in Norway. Over the following decades, the business developed from a mechanical workshop into a shipbuilding operation.

This shipbuilding heritage would later become part of a broader ambition: to bring together expertise from vessel design, construction and operation.

Bringing three worlds together.

More than twenty years ago, a shipyard owner and vessel operator recognised a gap in the market. Ship designers understood design. Shipyards understood construction. Vessel operators understood operations. But these perspectives were rarely brought together in a way that connected the design process with the realities of construction, operation and long-term value creation.

When Havyard acquired Leine Maritime in 2005, the ambition was to bridge that gap. Knowledge, experience, processes and standards from shipbuilding and vessel operations were systematically integrated into the design organisation. This became a defining part of the philosophy that continues to shape HAV Design today.

An independent company.

Over the following years, the design organisation continued to develop its capabilities, combining maritime engineering with new technologies and a growing international market presence. In 2021, HAV Design became independent from the shipyard as part of the formation and stock market listing of HAV Group.

The mindset remains.

Today, HAV Design combines its maritime heritage with the flexibility of a modern design company, helping customers make better decisions and develop vessels built around their operational and commercial needs.

Our heritage is more than a history of shipbuilding and engineering. It has shaped how we understand our customers, approach challenges and make design decisions.

Three principles remain at the heart of our identity:

Focus on outcomes. Expertise to achieve them. Courage to deliver.

Performance.
By Design.
